Definition

Purpose is the underlying reason why an individual or organization exists and acts. It expresses the deeper intention behind decisions, beyond immediate goals or financial outcomes.

In a business context, purpose connects what a company does with why it matters. It informs direction, shapes culture, and influences long-term strategy. Unlike goals, which can change frequently, purpose tends to evolve more slowly and provides continuity over time.

Significance

Purpose is often treated as something that can be defined in a meeting. A few hours, a workshop, a well-worded sentence, and it’s “done.” In reality, purpose rarely works that way. It is not something you invent. It is something you discover.

Most companies do not start with a clear, fully formed purpose. They begin with an idea, an opportunity, or a capability. Over time, through trial and error, success and failure, they begin to understand where they truly create value and what role they play in a larger system. Purpose crystallizes through experience.

This is why purpose requires movement. You lean into what feels right, what works, what resonates with your values and capabilities. You test it in the real world. You adjust. You refine. Gradually, the signal becomes clearer. What initially looked like a direction becomes a commitment.

Well-known companies illustrate this evolution. Amazon started as an online bookstore. Patagonia evolved from a climbing gear business into a company explicitly committed to environmental responsibility. In both cases, purpose was not declared once. It was shaped over time.

As Simon Sinek emphasizes, people are drawn to the “why.” But that “why” is not a slogan. It is the result of alignment between values, action, and reality. When purpose is authentic, it creates clarity, attracts the right people, and sustains motivation.

Purpose cannot be forced or fabricated.
