Orientation
Definition
Orientation is the ability to understand where you are, where you are going, and how to move between the two. It provides direction within complexity and allows individuals and organizations to make coherent decisions over time.
In a business context, orientation connects vision with reality. It helps navigate uncertainty, prioritize effectively, and maintain direction even when conditions change.
Orientation is not about having all the answers. It is about knowing how to move forward.
Significance
My husband says I “keep people from running around with untied shoes.” Others call it running around like a headless chicken. In Czech, we say motat se jako nudle v bandě (to whirl around as a noodle in a milk can). Different metaphors, same issue. Lack of orientation. And Orientation is one of the core values I bring to my work.
Part of it is my natural disposition, part of it is the role itself. While people are wrapped up in details, I step in from the outside and see the bigger picture. Without the weight of history or internal assumptions, it becomes easier to recognize what is actually happening and where things are heading.
In complex environments, lack of orientation leads to wasted energy, confusion, and poor decisions. People move fast, but not necessarily in the right direction. When orientation is present, things simplify. Priorities become clear. Decisions become easier. Movement becomes purposeful.
My role is not to provide answers, but to restore a sense of direction. I summarize possibilities and provide a palette of options. We move from putting out fires to intentional choices. Once people see where they are and where they are going, they usually know what to do next.
And that is orientation.
