Creativity
Definition
Creativity is the human ability to generate new ideas, connections, solutions, or forms of expression. It is not limited to the arts. In business, it appears in product development, problem-solving, innovation, communication, and strategic thinking. Every improvement a company makes is the result of creative work.
Creativity is not the privilege of a few gifted individuals. All humans are born with creative potential. It is a natural cognitive ability that combines curiosity, imagination, experience, and experimentation to produce something new or useful.
Significance
I often call creativity “making something where there was nothing before.” One of my clients once suggested a classic Czech metaphor: “making a ball out of a fart.” That captures the idea quite well.
I have been immersed in the subject of creativity since 1996, first as a creative professional, but also as a facilitator of creativity courses and a coach helping individuals unblock their potential. Yes, creativity can be taught. Or more precisely, it can be revived, nourished, and enabled. I do not tell people what to invent or paint. I show them how to stop blocking themselves from creating.
One thing I have learned from this work is that the reasons we do not create, or not as prolifically or as well as we would like, are deeply personal. We encounter a wide range of individual issues: low self-worth, fragile self-esteem, fear of criticism, reluctance to step into the spotlight, and many others. In corporate environments, these often surface as friction in collaboration or as leadership challenges within creative teams.
Businesses demand creativity. One well-known study identified creativity as the second most sought-after trait in business leaders. Yet the corporate world is anything but a safe playground for creative people. The pressure increases because creative positions are few and highly coveted. Some managers do not hesitate to burn out one talented person after another, easily replacing them with the next candidate.
Investing in an emotionally safe and collaborative environment, usually through time, attention, and leadership rather than just money, produces high levels of trust and engagement. These qualities allow companies to innovate quickly, respond to changing markets, and stay a step ahead of their competition.
Creativity, when cultivated properly, becomes a driver of competitive advantage.
And that is extremely valuable.
